Traditional victorian shop blinds and awnings

Flamingo Blinds & Awnings are one of few suppliers still manufacturing the Traditional Victorian Shop Blind. In some areas – Westminster, Camden and St. Albans for example - these traditional shop blinds are required officially by the local planning departments to conform with planning regulations.

Their presence enhances shop fronts and graces the modern high street. They provide highly effective and elegant protection from sunlight and rain and, since the smoking ban was introduced, are increasingly in demand from cafés and restaurants where outdoor undercover seating is required.

Flamingo Blinds make a top quality product using a 100% timber box with hardwood end cheeks. These provide strength and solidity at the point the awning is most stressed. Largely overlooked now, with the advent in the eighties of the continental type awning, these blinds are actually the most stable of awnings in bad weather conditions.

The maximum width is in the region of 6m, although Flamingo have made 7m units for McDonalds, with a maximum projection (depending on site conditions) of about 2.8m). There are basically 2 versions, and this is normally dependant on the fitting height available. Where the height is restricted the use of manually operated slides allow the steel arms to be raised above head height, thereby allowing to people to walk underneath unhindered.

They are operated by a "long- arm" , which is a pole that hooks into the front lath and is then pulled down. The weight of the timber front lath and the correct tension put on the spring roller maintains equilibrium.

Some of the finest components and fittings we are use supplied by Hopkins Fittings.
